How to Care For Your Antique

How to Care For Your Antique

Wearing heirloom and antique jewelry is a beautiful way to link the past with the present. Caring for your jewelry is important to ensure many years of future enjoyment. Everyone has their own opinions, but these are mine based on dealing with thousands of bracelets over the years…

The gold-filled pieces from Interlude Antiques are a reminder of the sustainability of well made items. As I have often said "it has made it this far, so I know I can care for it too".

I wear my bracelets every single day. The finish maintains the patina of old, but stays fresh with a little care as needed. If you ever need to polish your bracelets, I prefer using a product called simichrome, a metal polish that can also be used on sterling. A little bit from the yellow tube and a soft cloth will restore the richness of the pieces.

Like any polish, less is more. Much like silver, just that little touch that restores the brightness.

I wear my pieces daily and polishing is not something I do often with mine. I personally think it takes off some of the patina that I love about these pieces. So do so sparingly.

For my chains and even more ornate filigree bracelets, a quick splash in a bit of regular ammonia in a glass bowl can brighten it. If needed, use a toothbrush to get in the groves and a rinse under water before air drying. I find that chains need a quick dip every so often, as they touch the neck.

Another trick I used when my delicate chains get tangled is to lay it on a plate in baby powder. The powder gets in the little links and allows you to tease it apart with the end of a straight pen to untangle. Plus the smell is sweet!

If a price tag leaves a film on the inside of a piece, Dawn detergent is a miracle worker!

Lastly, I love this product by Shine. This is a jewelry cleaner to make your rings and pieces shine again.

Use a little TLC and always use caution if doing hard work in your pieces.
These wonderful old gold filled pieces have had a path to arrive to you and now it becomes a new chapter for loving them for future generations

Enjoy and make many happy memories in your pieces.
